The festival’s formula is already indicated, essentially, in its name.
"Intercity", in 1988, the year of its creation, was in fact the name of the type of train that rapidly and directly connected two big cities. With the festival, the theater hoped to connect the cities of Florence and Sesto Fiorentino with other global cities in much the same fashion, seeking to give the Italian public an idea of that which one can see, how the world of performance is organized and lives in a different reality.
The program of the festival, which runs for about three weeks, includes two or three productions from contemporary scripts from the chosen city, directed by directors both foreign and Italian, in addition to hosting various foreign companies.
The festival also includes readings and encounters with authors, cinematographic exhibitions, performances and theory-practice seminars. Since 1992, Intercity added to the productions a series of mises en espace, which bring the number of new works presented to around a dozen.
Since 1993 the publication of the translated works was added to the Intercity format, in collaboration with important publishing houses (Ubu Libri, AND-Kronos, Gremese, Editoria & Spettacolo). Through an independent publication, Intercity Plays, the works are distributed nationally to theaters, authors, directors and companies free of charge. All the scripts (8.500 ca.) collected for the festival are available in the theater’s library, organized by country and always updated.

The Festival is promoted by the Teatro della Limonaia, the Sesto Idee –Institution for Cultural, Educational and Recreational Services of Sesto Fiorentino, the Commune of Sesto Fiorentino, the Commune of Florence, the Province of Florence, the Region of Tuscany and the Minister of Cultural Affairs.
